Today was brilliant - did 15 mins warmup on Cross Trainer and then 4km run in 30 mins on the treadmill - had absolutely no problems from my shin or my back. I downloaded an Andy C drum and bass mix which helped me loads - I used to love drum and bass but its too hectic to listen to normally but for working out its great.
Gonna do Cross Trainer and weights tommorow and alternate a weights day and a running day - hopefully running every other day will keep the shin splints at bay till I have lost some weight and the muscles and fibres in my legs have toughened up again.
My fitness is definately returning - I ran 27 out of the 30 minutes today compared with when I started last week I had to walk 3 times during my run.
